Sander Meijerink is Professor of Water Governance at Radboud University. His research focuses on innovative governance arrangements and strategies for managing flood risk and water scarcity across administrative levels and hydrological scales. Conceptually, he draws on theories of polycentric and collaborative governance and policy change.
Meijerink has published in journals such as Environmental Science & Policy, Journal of European Public Policy, Water Policy, Environment and Planning A and C, Water Alternatives, and Regional Environmental Change, among others. He was co-editor of the books Water Policy Entrepreneurs (Edward Elgar, 2009) and The Politics of River Basin Organisations (Edward Elgar, 2014), as well as two special issues for the journal Ecology and Society. He is currently co-editing a special section on the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions in water resources management for the International Journal of Water Resources Development.
In 2024, Meijerink was a member of the council committee “Spatial Planning in a Changing Climate” of the Council for the Environment and Infrastructure. Currently, he is a member of the scientific review committee of the Dutch Delta Programme. Meijerink is involved in the Horizon Europe project Blue-Green Governance, which aims to develop new governance arrangements for the integrative governance of flood risk and nature restoration. He coordinates the Master’s specialisation Cities, Water and Climate Change within the Master’s programme in Spatial Planning.
Sander Meijerink studied Public Administration at the University of Twente and obtained his PhD (with distinction) at Delft University of Technology. He was visiting researcher at the Australian National University. Since 2003, he has been working at Radboud University, first as a postdoctoral researcher, then as assistant and associate professor, and since 2019 as a full professor.
