Professor emeritus - Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies
Toon van Meijl is professor emeritus of cultural anthropology with expertise in the Pacific region, in particular the New Zealand Maori. His research focuses on socio-political questions emerging from the debate about property rights, including cultural property, of indigenous peoples. In addition, he has published widely about cultural identity and the self of young people in multicultural societies. He was head of department between 2011 and 2017, when he developed a new research programme on the relationship between diversity and inequality, with special attention for issues of citizenship, democracy and dialogue in postcolonial Europe.
