Professor Thijs Merkx specializes in the surgical treatment of mouth, throat and facial cancer. He is particularly interested in the early detection of malignant and pre-malignant anomalies in the head and neck area and reconstructive surgery.

Merkx trains oral surgeons as part of the advanced head and neck oncology course. He is chairman of the registration committee of the Dutch Association of Mouth, Throat and Facial Surgery (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Mond-, Kaak- en Aangezichtschirurgie). The diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the head and neck area is concentrated in a few centres in the Netherlands; at the UMC St Radboud this is carried out by the Nijmegen Head and Neck Group (Nijmeegse Werkgroep Hoofd-Hals Tumoren), where Professor Merkx is a member of the executive committee. He is a board member of the Dutch Co-operative Head and Neck Group.
As council member of the foundation oral & maxillofacial surgery Tanzania (www.mka-tanzania.nl) he is related to the dental and oral & maxillofacial training program at Muhimbili University Health & Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
