Prof. E.M. Moormann (Eric)

Professor Eric Moormann studies the social world of the ancient Greeks and Romans that lived around the Mediterranean Sea. These societies were innovative in many areas and many of their inventions have been adopted into western culture. Professor Moormann's research focuses on Rome, Pompeii and Ostia, as examples of complex pre-industrial societies. Moormann carries out field work in the suburb of Rome along the Via Appia.

Another research area is the reception of antiques in the western world from the time of the Renaissance onwards: how were mythological themes incorporated into art and how did research into antique monuments develop? A topic of special interest is how Pompeii has been percieved in western culture from 1750 onwards. He also studies 18th-century archaeological research, especially Johan Joachim Winckelmann.
