My PhD project focuses on the brain's control mechanisms of working memory content. I explore how the neurotransmitter dopamine modulates working memory gating mechanisms, i.e., how we selectively let information enter working memory and how we prioritise items within it, so that relevant information can influence action and attention.
Additionally, I am interested in control mechanisms of negative, repetitive thinking, called rumination, which is a common symptom of multiple psychiatric disorders. In particular, I investigate whether distraction can disrupt ruminative thoughts in working memory using behavioural and neuroimaging methods. Potentially, the findings could ultimately contribute to improve clinical treatment methods and prevention.
