Brecht Nijman (1996) is an external PhD candidate at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Her research traces maritime trade networks across the Indian Ocean during the seventeenth and eighteenth century. She is particularly interested in how pre-existing maritime trade networks responded to European colonial expansion in the period.

Brecht obtained an MA in History from the University of Edinburgh (2019) and an MSc in Applied Data Science from Utrecht University (2022). She previously worked as a student assistant on 'The slavery history of historical predecessors of ABN AMRO' project at the IISH. Next to her PhD, Brecht continues to work as a junior researcher at the Huygens Institute as part of the GLOBALISE project.
