Professor Roeland Nolte is an international expert in organic chemistry. He is head of the editing team for the British chemical science journal Chemical Communications and is a member of the editing team for the prestigious scientific journal Science. He was one of the first people to combine organic chemistry and nanotechnology, resulting in new techniques with important applications. He uses synthetic polymers and natural building blocks such as peptides and proteins to create nanostructures. He also succeeded in the synthesis of complex macromolecular compounds with catalytic properties, which very much resemble those in living organisms, thus making a connection with molecular biology.

Professor Nolte is director of the Institute for Molecules and Materials. He has published more than 500 papers and has received various prizes. He has been a guest lecturer at, amongst other places, MIT, Cornell University and the University of Sydney. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts. He has been an Academy professor since 2003, which enables him to spend more time on innovative research and on supervising young researchers.
