The research project of Loes Scholten focuses on the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century sources on Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450-1516).
Can we reconstruct the network of people surrounding Bosch and his work? How will his workshop have functioned? Who will he have worked with? Who were his patrons? An important part of this research focuses on the accounts of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of 's-Hertogenbosch; a brotherhood of which Bosch was a high-ranking member. During the time that Bosch's fame as a painter began to increase, this brotherhood just moved into a new chapel. In order to decorate this chapel, many new artworks were patronized. It seems only logical that the brothers also appealed to the expertise of fellow brother Bosch; possible as an executor but at least as an advisor. To what extent is Bosch's work (or the work from his workshop) traceable in the chapel? What does this tracing say about Bosch status as a craftsman, artist and resident of 's-Hertogenbosch?
