My research focuses on increasing the understanding of the cycling of elements important to life in aquatic ecosystems. Key elements of interest include carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen and a range of trace metals. The research involves field and laboratory work integrated with modeling at various spatial and temporal scales (including the geological past).
A key research line focuses on biogeochemical processes and the underlying microbiology in coastal marine ecosystems (e.g. in the Baltic Sea, Black Sea) and the response of these systems to perturbation, such as due to eutrophication, deoxygenation and global warming.
