Professor Jan Smeitink is director of the Nijmegen Center for Mitochondrial Disorders, the Institute for Genetic and Metabolic Disease and head of the department of Metabolic and Endocrine Diseases at the University Children's Hospital. His group researches the hereditary causes of disorders in energy metabolism in cells and their consequences.

Research into the function of mitochondrions, the cell's energy factories, provides knowledge concerning the ageing process, programmed cell death, degenerative disorders and rare forms of cancer.

Professor Smeitink has an appointment as foreign adjunct professor at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm Sweden. He has ample experience in coordinating multi-centre national and international research consortia
