Casper Smeulders is a PhD candidate at the Department of Jurisprudence and affiliated with the Research Centre for State and Law. His doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Roel Schutgens (Radboud University) and Prof. Joost Sillen (Maastricht University) focusses on the state of emergency. He is also interested in the adjudication of politically sensitive cases.

Casper obtained an LLB and an LLM, summa cum laude, in Constitutional and Administrative Law from Radboud University. He also holds an LLM, cum laude, in Legal Research from the University of Groningen. As a law student, he was research assistant at the Centre for Parliamentary History and teaching assistant at the Department of Jurisprudence.
