Plastic surgeon Paul Spauwen specializes in reconstructive surgery in the fields of congenital defects, traumata, and tumours. These problems can often be solved by using the patients' own tissue but are increasingly being remedied by using biomaterials. His research group, in collaboration with the Biomaterials Department, develops such biomaterials on the basis of tissue engineering. Paul Spauwen underlines the important of ethical questions in his domain: what can be done, what must be done, and what may be done?
