Adolescents in the age of 12 to 14 start to spend more time with peers, which increasingly takes place online. To form and maintain these relationships, adolescents need to develop social skills such as emotion regulation, initiation of interaction, and empathy. With the rise of digital media, adolescents’ opportunities to practice these skills have increased dramatically. Although there is concern about whether this widespread use of digital media among adolescents inhibits their social development, the effects of digital media are not straightforward: evidence is found for both negative and positive effects of digital media. Therefore, this project aims to gain insight into (1) the relation between adolescents' digital media use and their social development, (2) how key persons may affect this relation, and (3) the role of adolescents' individual differences. This will be studied using various research methods, including qualitative interviews and longitudinal survey research.
