Cristian works as a postdoc at the Centre for Language and Speech Technology (CLST), Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands). His research fields are automatic speech recognition, Human-computer interaction and speech technology in second-language acquisition.
His research focuses on adapting automatic speech recognition techonlogy for Dutch children speech and reading diagnostics, combining it with learning analytics and providing scientific insights into reading development, early detection of reading problems and subsequent personalization of reading instruction to meet the needs of individual children and support them even better (ASTLA project).
Another project of his, ST.CART, motivates children in learning to read in a fun way by adaptating to the level of the student. In addition to the project, The Care Assistant is a new module based on an existing Virtual Assistant (Anne) – which helps elderly people with dementia to remain independent for longer – which can diagnose specific diseases (Parkinson, Alzheimer's) based on speech features.
Finally, in the HoMed project, the aim is to implement a research infrastructure with an enormous potential for automatic transcription of sensitive audio-visual (AV) recordings. Its use case will focus on AV-recordings of medical consultations on the use of pharmaceuticals. These situations are in practice those in which patients often appear not to be able to understand proper medicine use.
