My PhD project is focussed on the motivation of gifted students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. In the first study I compared students from the Netherlands with students from Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and Denmark by using the PISA data. In the second study I compared the motivation of Dutch students from high and low socioeconomic backgrounds. This study showed differences between the two groups in the process of motivation. Based on this outcome, I designed and tested an intervention, aimed at enhancing the motivation of gifted students from families with low socioeconomic status. In my present and last study, the impact of the improved version of the intervention is researched longitudinally. As a junior researcher I study the effectivity of the School & Environment programmes that aim to provide students from less advantaged backgrounds with a rich schoolday. A rich schoolday is assumed to contribute to better educational opportunities for these students.
