Aafke Uilhoorn (they/them) is a Medicine graduate from Maastricht University, where they combined their medical studies with courses in Health Humanities and Global Health. Their work bridges medicine and humanities, with a focus on queer health and well-being.
Aafke joined Radboud University in 2022 as a junior researcher in the transdisciplinary project “My Gender, Whose Care?”, examining the changing demands of transgender care in the Netherlands. They organized and conducted focus groups with gender-diverse individuals and healthcare professionals, culminating in a report published in early 2023.
They then worked on a research project exploring gender identity and diversity in people with intellectual disabilities through a literature and interview study, with a report forthcoming.
Now a PhD candidate, Aafke researches contingency and well-being among transgender and non-binary people and their (chosen) families. Their work follows feminist ethics and intersectionality, and they use a participatory, collaborative approach. Their PhD is supervised by Dr. M. Scherer-Rath, Prof. Dr. C.A.M. Van den Berg and Dr. C.M. Verhaak.
