My research is focused on the neurochemistry of neurodegenerative disorders, specifically movement disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s disease) and dementia syndromes (in particular cerebral amyloid angiopathy, Alzheimer’s disease). I study the development and validation of biomarkers in body fluids (especially cerebrospinal fluid) for diagnosis and prognosis of these disorders; I collaborate with the Parkinson Centre Nijmegen and the Radboud Alzheimer Centre as well as with many (inter)national researchers. I also study pathophysiological mechanisms of cerebrovascular amyloid formation focusing on aggregation of disease-related proteins, interaction with other proteins and cerebral cells and clearance pathways of these proteins from the brain.
