Mariëtte Verhoeven is a research fellow 'Culture, Religion and Memory' at the Radboud Institute for Culture and History. Her Ph.D. thesis entitled "The Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna. Transformations and Memory" was published in 2011 (Brepols). Verhoeven specializes in the field of early Christian and Byzantine architectural history. Her other research interests include the cult of saints and relics, processions in Byzantium, the Fourth Crusade and the capture of Constantinople, and water heritage in Istanbul. Currently her research focuses on the cultural history and transformation of Byzantine heritage in Istanbul, and the use of digital techniques to unlock and to activate the memorial potential of cultural heritage. Verhoeven regularly gives lectures to a broader audience.
