In her research, Sharon explores how secondary schools with heterogeneous classes can create equal opportunities through detracking. She studies how differentiation practices within these classes are related to students' self-confidence, motivation, and academic performance, considering students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and primary school recommendations. Additionally, the role of 'level awareness' is explored. This is the extent to which students are aware of differences in academic skill levels within the classroom. It is possible that students' level awareness influences their learning outcomes and thereby limits the potential effect of heterogeneous classes on educational equity. The aim of the project is to gain better insight into the differentiation practices that play a role in student development within heterogeneous classes.
