Henri de Waele is Full Professor of International and European Law. His research primarily focuses on European institutional law, with special emphasis on the interaction between the institutions, the effect of European rules in the domestic legal order, the system of judicial protection and EU citizenship. It also extends to the external relations of the EU and the position of the Union within the international legal order, as well as the foundations and general principles of public international law.

Since 2010, De Waele also serves as Guest Professor of EU External Relations Law at the University of Antwerp. He moreover was Visiting Professor at the Center for European Integration Studies of the University of Bonn between 2013 and 2023, and the College of Law of National Taiwan University in the 2015-2016 academic year. He has given lectures and papers at a number of seminars and conferences abroad, inter alia at the University of Cambridge, Jagiellonian University Cracow, the Academy of European Law (Trier), the University of Glasgow, University of Ljubljana, University of Hamburg, King's College London, the College of Europe (Bruges) and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (Malta).
