My research is focused on the microorganisms that contribute to the cycling of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas in coastal sediments. Coastal ecosystems are hotspots for methane emissions due fluctuating condition, partially caused by anthropogenic activity. I study the processes and microorganisms involved in both production as well as consumption methane in anoxic parts of the sediments. I am especially interested to understand how metal oxides buried in the sediment are used by these microorganisms in methane cycling.
