Ellen van Wolde is Full Professor of Source Texts of Judaism and Exegesis Old Testament and is Chair of the Department Source Texts of Judaism and Christianity at the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.
In her research, Ellen van Wolde investigates the linguistic, literary and cultural contents of texts in the Hebrew Bible as they figure in the cultural context of the Ancient Near East. In these semantic studies she uses linguistics and especially cognitive linguistics as the instrument of analysis. In her inaugural lecture (Nijmegen, 2009), she presented a new explanation of the first three verses in Genesis. Based upon a linguistic analysis of the Hebrew text of Genesis 1:1-3 and a comparison with Mesopotamian texts on the beginning of the universe, she concluded that these verses do not describe the beginning of the universe as creatio ex nihilo, God’s creation of the cosmos out of nothing, but expresses God’s separation of the heaven and the earth in the primordial mass of waters.
