Motivation

The Faculty of Medicine offers students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of teaching through an elective internship. Although the elective internship is a nice introduction to the role of a teacher, participating students experience that they are insufficiently prepared for teaching. In order to better equip students, it is important to teach didactic skills. How can a new learning trajectory 'educational didactics' offer students tools in this regard?

Hypothesis

By giving students the opportunity to delve deeper into teaching, they can already gain experience in teaching during their studies. These experiences will result in more enthusiastic students and (hopefully) in continued engagement in education.

Desired solution

The purpose of this innovation voucher is to add the learning trajectory 'educational didactics' to the existing elective internship 'Education'. This learning trajectory will include a didactic program for a period of four weeks, in which one day each week will be devoted to various themes such as didactics and assessment. The aim is to provide students with practical, didactic and educational knowledge and skills. An important aspect of the learning trajectory is the emphasis on intervision, which allows students to learn with and from each other.

Plan of action

Jolanda and Mike start by developing the curriculum, drawing up the lesson plan and educational materials. After informing medical students about the new curriculum, the learning trajectory 'educational didactics' will actually be implemented. At the end, students and teachers evaluate the learning pathway together and adjust it based on the feedback received.

Results

With the addition of the learning line Educational Didactics, Mike and Jolanda have further deepened the elective internship Education and Training. This learning line focuses on didactic knowledge, skills and professionalism. Students do the internship within a self-chosen medical specialism and also meet weekly for four weeks for a theme day. During these meetings, different themes are discussed (see figure 1) and at the same time there is room to tailor the offer to the students' learning wishes.

The programme offers students the opportunity not only to develop their teaching skills, but also to link theoretical knowledge on didactics with practical experience in the clinical setting. By working together and learning from medical specialists and educationists, students can further develop both their didactic skills and their vision on education and share insights with colleagues. This creates a valuable interaction between theory and practice and between coassistant and medical specialist.

The impact of this project is now becoming visible. Several former participants are now basic doctors and have taken on additional teaching tasks. As such, this fellowship contributes to strengthening the quality of education in medical practice and stimulates a culture in which doctors are actively involved in training. In the long term, Jolanda and Mike expect this to contribute to a more cohesive healthcare and education system, in which doctors are better prepared to supervise and train their colleagues.

Funding

This project is funded by a TLC voucher from the Radboud Teaching and Learning Centre. This voucher programme aims to set up projects in the field of educational innovation, lecturer development and educational research.
