Make the NET a little better

Energy and Spatial Planning

In February 2024, Alliander commissioned an interdisciplinary group of students from Radboud University to study grid congestion in the Netherlands and, based on this, to draw up a recommendation to encourage consumers to load the electricity grid less during peak times.

Several strategies are possible to encourage people who cannot yet charge smart to do so. These are the charging station strategy (encourage people who do not yet have a smart charging station to buy one), the software strategy (where the software in the car knows how to charge smartly), the energy supplier strategy (the energy supplier helps the consumer to make smarter choices) and campaign strategy (campaign to encourage consumers to change their behaviour).

The students' focus was on the campaign strategy, in part because this is where Alliander could take the most control.

Results

The study revealed that three steps must be followed to ultimately achieve behavior change: (1) awareness, to move from unconscious behavior to conscious behavior; (2) intention formation, to move from conscious behavior to a new intention; and finally (3) behavior change, to move from intention to new behavior. To each step, Alliander could attach a campaign to bring about the desired change.

The students described their research and findings in an advisory report.
