Promoting critical global citizenship at the Radboud Law Clinic

TLC voucher project

Motivation

In traditional Dutch legal education, there is little room for social involvement and reflection on social justice. An exception to this is the Radboud Law Clinic, where students have the opportunity to develop critical global citizenship through experiential learning and reflection on social justice values. Critical global citizenship is the awareness and active engagement in global issues to promote positive change. What elements in this form of education contribute to the promotion of critical global citizenship?

Hypothesis

Although it is believed that the Radboud Law Clinic promotes critical citizenship, it remains unclear what specific elements drive this. This is exactly what Eva and Anna are going to investigate with the help of their voucher. Among other things, they look at the role of reflection, teaching critical legal theory, interaction with organizations and how these activities can best be organized. In addition, they want to develop strategies to involve more students of the Master's in Law in learning about critical citizenship.

Desired solution

Eva and Anna pursue two main goals. First, exploring and understanding the elements that contribute to critical global citizenship at the Radboud Law Clinic. Second, developing strategies to incorporate these elements into mainstream law education, thereby engaging more students in critical global citizenship.

Plan of action

The first year of the research will be dedicated to the development of an evaluation plan, including a survey with pre- and post-measurement and in-depth interviews with alumni. At the same time, students will have the opportunity to visit civil society organizations.

The second year is dedicated to conducting surveys and in-depth interviews with alumni. In addition, Eva and Anna are developing a manual in which they explain how the ideas of global citizenship can be applied in regular law studies.

Funding

This project is funded by a TLC voucher from the Radboud Teaching and Learning Centre. This voucher programme aims to set up projects in the field of educational innovation, lecturer development and educational research.
