Citizens from EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland all have or can apply for a European Health Insurance Card. This card gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the Netherlands. The EHIC is issued by your national health insurance provider.
Please make sure you also have an appropriate liability and travel insurance, because the European Health Insurance Card
- is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property;
- does not cover your costs if you are travelling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment; and
- does not guarantee free services. Each country's healthcare system has different services. What may not cost anything at home might not be free in another country.
Please note that EHIC has special conditions depending on your country of origin. Check carefully if your EHIC card covers sufficient medical costs and if the card covers the complete period of your stay.
