Do you want to achieve a high level of English proficiency so you can feel more secure when you communicate in English? In the Advanced English (C1) course, you will sharpen your English language skills to communicate effectively in international settings.

General

In this C1 course, you will work with learners of a similar level to develop greater confidence and flexibility in using English at C1 level. You will receive personal feedback from your teacher at multiple moments during the course.

The course consists of six lessons, complemented by two skills workshops of your choice:

After this English course, you will be able to:

  • speak English at a high level and express yourself fluently and spontaneously. You can participate effectively in conversations and discussions on complex topics in both social and professional contexts;
  • formulate ideas and opinions with precision and convey clear and detailed descriptions of complex topics in a structured way;
  • follow lectures, presentations and other forms of complex oral communication effortlessly, even when they are not explicitly structured. You can also follow English-language TV shows and films without difficulty;
  • understand extensive and detailed texts, including abstract and structurally or linguistically complex texts, such as specialised articles and literature.

The six fixed lessons in this course will take place from 16 September to 28 October 2026. The skills workshops are scheduled for the following two weeks, and it is up to you to choose which two you wish to attend. There will be no class during the week of 19 October due to the autumn holiday.

  • Class day and times: Wednesdays from 6 pm - 8 pm
  • Location: on campus in Nijmegen
  • Number of participants: min. 8 - max. 18

If a lesson is cancelled, it will be rescheduled in the week following the last lesson.

Approach and content

During classes, you will be fully immersed in English. You will strengthen your ability to understand a wide range of demanding texts and to express ideas fluently, spontaneously, and with a high degree of accuracy. You will refine your use of complex grammatical structures, expand your lexical range, and improve your ability to adapt language to social, academic, and professional contexts.

Through interactive speaking tasks, you will practise presenting ideas, participating in discussions, and responding to others with clarity and precision. Regular feedback supports continued development in accuracy, pronunciation, and overall communicative effectiveness.

The course is supported by a coursebook and self-study materials to consolidate and extend your learning.

Individual study

 You can continue to develop your skills outside classes with our comprehensive teaching materials. You should count on about two to four hours of individual study per week.

The course material can be purchased at Roelants bookstore. Course material is not included in the course fee.

  • RU staff Radboudumc: free of charge (provided that they meet the necessary conditions for Language Policy Courses)

Determine your level with a free test

To determine your level, you will first have to take an online placement test (Oxford Online Placement Test, OOPT). An OOPT score of 80 or higher or a Cambridge Preliminary certificate (score c or higher) is required to enroll in the English C1 course.

If you have successfully completed a course with us you will receive a certificate of Radboud in'to Languages stating your level.

If you want to get an idea of your level on your own, you can do this using our online level test.
