Advanced English course (C1) – Cambridge Advanced

Do you want to achieve a high level of English proficiency so you can communicate successfully in academic and professional environments? In the Advanced English (C1) course, you will sharpen your English language skills for complex communication in international settings. 

    General

    In this course, you will hone your English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to C1 level. The course covers advanced grammar more thoroughly and will expand your vocabulary with more specialised terminology, allowing you to communicate in English with finesse and precision. These are the skills you need to work and study successfully in international environments.

    After this English course, you will be able to:

    • Speak English at a high level and express yourself fluently and spontaneously. You can participate effectively in conversations and discussions on complex topics in both social and professional contexts;
    • Formulate ideas and opinions with precision and convey clear and detailed descriptions of complex topics in a structured way;
    • Follow lectures, presentations and other forms of complex oral communication effortlessly, even when they are not explicitly structured. You can also follow English-language TV shows and films without difficulty;
    • Understand, analyse and critically evaluate extensive and detailed texts, including abstract and structurally or linguistically complex texts, such as specialised articles and literature;
    • Write clear, well-structured and detailed texts on complex topics, and effectively use style and register adapted to the purpose and reader. You can write essays, emails, letters, proposals, reports and reviews.

    You can choose from the following two groups:

    Group A

    This course takes place from 23 February until 29 June 2026. There is no class on 6 April and 25 May and in the week of 27 April and 4 May because of the holidays.

    • Days and times: Mondays from 6.00 - 8.00 pm.
    • Location: on campus in Nijmegen
    • Number of participants: min. 8 - max. 18.

    Group B

    This course takes place from 24 February until 16 June 2026. There is no class in the week of 27 April and 4 May because of the holidays.

    Approach and content

    During classes, you will be fully immersed in English: you will have the chance to discuss complex texts and ideas, and practise pronunciation and advanced conversation techniques. Outside of classes, you can continue to develop your skills using our comprehensive teaching materials. You will also receive valuable tips and exercises for the Cambridge Advanced exam. You will receive personal feedback from your teacher at multiple moments during the course. You should count on about two to four hours of individual study per week.

    The course material can be purchased at Roelants bookstore. Course material is not included in the course fee.

    At the end of the course you will not only have raised your English to a higher level, but you will also be prepared for the Cambridge Advanced Exam (C1): you will know exactly what to expect during the exam and how best to tackle the assignments. You can take a Cambridge exam at one of the Cambridge examination centres in the Netherlands. You will be assessed on four skills: Reading and use of English, writing, listening and speaking. 

    If you pass the exam, you will receive a certificate that will enhance your CV on an international level. This certificate is recognised in almost all countries and remains valid throughout your life. The exam costs are not included in the course fee. You can find an exam center near you on the Cambridge website. You can register for an exam through this provider. You can also take this course if you do not want to take the exam.

    • RU staff Radboudumc: free of charge (provided that they meet the necessary conditions for Language Policy Courses)

    Determine your level with a free test

    To determine your level, you will first have to take an online placement test (Oxford Online Placement Test, OOPT). An OOPT score of 80 or higher or a Cambridge Preliminary certificate (score c or higher) is required to enroll in the English C1 course – Cambridge Advanced.

    OOPT: More information and registration

    If you have successfully completed a course with us you will receive a certificate of Radboud in'to Languages stating your level. You can use this certificate to advance to the next level within a year without having to take the OOPT again.

    If you want to get an idea of your level on your own, you can do this using our online level test.
