Dual training course to become a teacher of Dutch as a Second Language (NT2)

Do you want to be able to teach Dutch to non-native speakers? During the dual training course to become an NT2 teacher, you will learn how to teach non-native speakers at different starting levels in a professional way. The great thing about this course is that you can immediately apply what you learn in practice.

    General

    Note: this course is only taught in Dutch.

    The three components of the dual training programme to become an NT2 teacher

    The course consists of three parts.
    1. Portfolio
    2. Plenary meetings
    3. Practical section

    Competencies

    The contents of the course are based on:

    • The SBL competence profile (Stichting Beroepskwaliteit Leraren) for general teaching skills
    • The BVNT2 competence profile (Beroepsvereniging Nederlands als Tweede Taal) for specific didactic skills for language teaching and for teaching non-Dutch speakers: A and B competences, (C competences: N/A)

    Target group

    Are you currently working as a teaching assistant, and do you want to make the step up to being an NT2 teacher? Have you recently started as an NT2 teacher and want to get certified? Or would you like to combine an internship as an NT2 teacher with a training programme? Then this is the course for you.

    Certificate

    You will be trained to become a BVNT2-certified teacher. You will receive a certificate when you have met the following requirements:

    • 80% mandatory attendance;
    • A portfolio approved by the programme;
    • A well-assessed final interview;
    • A passing assessment from your internship supervisor;
    • Sufficient internship hours.

    Have you been working as an NT2 teacher for several years? If so, then use the EVC procedure. You can do this if you have taken further education and training, and you can use it to prove your professional competencies.

    The three components of the dual training programme to become an NT2 teacher

    1. Portfolio

    Every participant compiles a portfolio throughout the course. This involves collecting a variety of materials during the course that are used to show competency development. The products you will compile are: processing assignments following the lectures, a lesson outline, peer consultation reports, observation reports, an internship report and a final reflection on your own competences as an NT2 teacher.

    2. Plenary meetings

    Topics covered:

    • The theory of second language acquisition and second language learning
    • An introduction to different target groups and target group analysis
    • Introduction to commonly used NT2 course books
    • General didactic skills
    • Language didactics and the teacher’s role in language acquisition
    • Attention to different skills
    • Assessment and evaluation of language skills
    • Education for low-skilled and illiterate students
    • Peer consultation and reflection on own actions

    3. Practical section

    As part of the course, the participant must cover at least 240 practical hours of NT2 teaching. At least half of this should consist of contact hours; the remaining hours are spent on activities like preparing classes, correcting homework and tests, student supervision, consultation with supervisors and cooperating with colleagues.

    Study Load

    The total study load including the practical part is +/- 640 hours (two days per week on average).

    • 120 hours of plenary meetings + studying literature

    Admission requirements

    You need to have completed one of the following HBO/WO study programmes to be admitted to this course:

    • a study programme with a teaching qualification, such as PABO, or teacher training in Dutch or a foreign language and at least two years of demonstrable teaching experience in the past ten years;
    • a study programme in Dutch or a foreign language without a teaching qualification, general or applied linguistics, interpreter-translator training, speech therapy, education science, but with some experience in NT2 teaching;
    • a study programme with a teaching qualification (other than Dutch or modern foreign languages) and working or soon to be working as an NT2 teacher in an International Transition Class (ISK) and at least two years of demonstrable teaching experience in the past ten years;
    • Teachers with teaching qualifications other than Dutch or modern foreign languages who do not work at an ISK must have at least two years of demonstrable teaching experience and some experience in NT2 teaching.

    Since you will be trained as a language teacher, a good command of Dutch (level C1/4F) is a prerequisite. You can demonstrate that you have achieved this level with an HBO qualification (or higher) from a Dutch-speaking institution, assuming the programme was taken in Dutch. People who have not completed Dutch-language studies in higher education must be able to demonstrate that their language is at C1 level, for example with a Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal (at the highest level).

    A language assessment may be part of the admission procedure.
