Evening course Dutch for beginners I (0-A1)

This course for beginners give you a solid foundation in the Dutch language. This course is the first in a series that prepare you for the Staatsexamen NT2 (state exam in Dutch as a second language), programme II.

    General

    Do you want to learn Dutch and are you looking for a Dutch evening course? This course teaches you how to converse and correspond in Dutch. Attention is also given to Dutch habits and customs.

    What will the course bring you?

    The main objective of these courses is to learn to communicate in Dutch. All skills are developed: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. To this end, attention is given to such matters as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Reading and writing skills are mostly practiced in the time allotted for self-study. Courses are conducted in Dutch.

    Who is this course for?

    This course is a good fit for you if you are an absolute beginner learning Dutch. You don't mind several hours of self-study per week.

    Pre-requisites to follow this course

    • You have followed at least 5 years of secondary education in your country of origin
    • Your command of English is A2 level or higher

    Are you integrating in Dutch society? Make sure to read the information about the civic integration programme and DUO loan.

    Certificate

    You receive a certificate upon completion of the course, provided you have attended at least 80% of the classes and you have passed the assessment, the result of which will appear on your certificate.

    Final level: Dutch at beginner level: A1 (CEFR). After the beginners course, you continue with the evening course: Dutch at beginner level (A1-A2).

    This course takes place from 10 February until 4 June 2025. You can choose from the following two options:

    Group A

    • Course day and time: Monday & Wednesday from 4.00 - 5.30 pm 
    • Location: At our location in Nijmegen
    • Number of participants: min. 15 - max. 18

    Group B

    • Course day and time: Monday & Wednesday from 4.00 - 5.30 pm 
      Location: Online via the Virtual Classroom and always involves guidance from a teacher 
      Number of participants: min. 15 - max. 15

    If a lesson is cancelled, it will be rescheduled in the two weeks following the last lesson (week 23 & 24).
    You should count on about six to eight hours of individual study per week.

    Exam dates

    The assessments will take place in week 25. The resit will take place in week 26.

    Please note: 

    • The assessments take place during the day, in the Erasmus Building on campus. It is not possible to take the assessment online.
    • You will only be allowed to take the assessment if you have attended at least 80% of the classes. 
    • You will receive the assessment schedule in the second week after the start of the course.

    What will you learn in this course?

    This course focuses on the different skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Dutch is spoken as much as possible during classes.

    Reading

    You can understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences, such as in announcements, catalogues and on posters.

    Listening

    You can understand familiar words and basic phrases concerning yourself, your family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.

    Speaking

    You can participate in simple conversations when your interlocutor is willing to repeat or rephrase things slower and helps you formulate what you are trying to say. You can ask and answer simple questions that talk about topics that you are very familiar with.

    Writing

    You can write a short, simple postcard to give greetings from, for example. You can fill in personal details on forms, such as your name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.

    Course material is not included in the course fee. The course material can be purchased at Roelants bookstore.

    Costs

    • Standard fee: € 1.008,-
    • RU staff Radboudumc: free of charge (provided that they meet the necessary conditions for Language Policy Courses)
    • RU and Radboudumc employees and alumni: € 907,20 (10% discount)
    • WUR employees and students: € 907,20 (10% discount)
    • RU students: free of charge, provided that they meet the following criteria:
    1. You meet the 80% attendance requirement. If you do not meet this requirement, you will be charged € 504,-.
    2. You can attend one evening course for free. If you want to follow another evening course, you get 50% discount on the course fee.

    Instead of one evening course, you can also take two free Social Dutch classes as a RU student.
