What will you lean in this course?
This class focuses on the different skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Reading and writing skills are mostly practiced in the time allotted for self-study. Dutch is spoken as much as possible during classes.
Listening
You can follow conversations on abstract, complex topics. You can follow conversations on everyday topics, even when speakers deviate from standard language. You can follow radio, TV programmes and films, even when speakers use informal and idiomatic language. You can understand longer speeches, even if they are not well structured. You can understand announcements when the speech is unclear.
Reading
You can understand all forms of correspondence; this may involve using a dictionary. You can understand long and complex texts in detail if you are allowed to reread difficult passages. You can process larger amounts of information and extract the information relevant to you. You can read non-fiction texts with ease.
Speaking
Conversations
You can use language flexibly and effectively in a wide variety of social situations, and you can express emotions and use humorous language. You can understand complex interactions between speakers and participate in group discussions with ease, even when dealing with abstract, complex or unfamiliar topics. You can put forward your point of view in a convincing manner in both informal and formal contexts and respond fluently and appropriately to questions and comments. You can participate in various kinds of meetings and play various roles in them (chair, participant, taking minutes). You can make phone calls in less predictable circumstances.
Speaking
You can provide clear and detailed descriptions and explanations on a variety of complex topics. You can deliver clear and well-constructed presentations on complex topics, responding to interruptions almost effortlessly. You can give extensive report on experiences and events, addressing sub-themes and finishing with an appropriate conclusion.
Writing
You can express yourself in personal emails and letters clearly. You can produce well-structured summaries of complex texts. You can write comprehensive, persuasive and structured arguments. You can correspond with other students or colleagues on substantive topics. You can write complex and well-structured business letters.
