Inclusive communication

Ever more organisations are striving to create a culture in which everyone feels seen, heard and valued. This requires the ability to properly approach differences between people. In the Inclusive Communication course, you will learn what inclusiveness is and receive insights and tools that will help you to communicate more inclusively.

    Content and structure

    Session 1: Introduction to inclusiveness

This first session focusses on awareness. What is inclusion and what are its key aspects? You will be introduced to the diversity cycle and the different aspects of diversity. You will get to work right away, creating your own diversity matrix. In this session, you will become more aware of situations in which diversity can play a role and deepen your understanding of cultural impact. By the end, you will have a set of practical tools, ideas and (follow-up) actions that you can put into action as soon as you are back at work.

Session 2: Unconscious biases and giving inclusive feedback

We reflect on the unconscious biases we all have in this session. Even if we strive to always communicate inclusively. What are unconscious biases, how do they affect how we see others and what do they mean for how we interact? You will be given strategies you can use to gain awareness of your biases and how to address them. You will also gain insight into different (intercultural) strategies that pertain to feedback. You will learn how to exchange feedback with each other in dialogues; feedback that is clear as well as respectful to you and your conversation partners, regardless of differences in communication styles. You can apply the strategies you learn immediately in your team, in teaching or in other situations in which feedback is shared.

    Session 3: Inclusive language

If you want everyone to feel included, and you want your message to really get through, it is vital that you use inclusive language. This is language that treats people equally. Language that does not differentiate between level of education, skills, he/she/they, colour, religion, disabilities or any number of other things if they are not relevant. During this session, you will become aware of common pitfalls and learn what to look out for to ensure your language does not exclude anyone. You will receive tips and guidelines for writing and speaking inclusively. Besides ‘othering’ and asymmetric language, imagery is also covered, among other things. You can start working on your own texts immediately after this session.
