Language course Italian for absolute beginners (halfway to A1)

If you would like to learn Italian and you have no previous knowledge of the language, this Italian beginner’s course is a good place to start. You will be introduced to the Italian language and culture and learn the basics of communicating in Italian.

    General

    After completing this Italian language course, you will be able to:

    • understand simple words, expressions and sentences;
    • ask and answer simple, short questions;
    • follow a simple conversation;
    • write simple, short sentences about personal matters;

    The course focuses primarily on verbal communication, as well as reading, listening and writing skills. You will also learn more about Italian culture.

    To receive a Radboud in’to Languages certificate, you need to attend 80% of the classes.

    This course will help you on your way to language level A1. After completing this course, you can continue with the Italian A1 course to complete the A1 level.

    This course takes place from 20 January until 24 March. There is no class on 3 and 17 February.

    Class day and time: Tuesdays from 6.00 -7.30 pm.
    Location: On campus in Nijmegen

    Approach and content

    Italian is spoken as much as possible during classes, with Dutch and English as the supporting language. This means that in some cases, it is possible to take the course even if you do not speak Dutch. Please contact our Service Centre for more information.

    You should count on about three to four hours of individual study per week.

    What do the classes cover?

    Skills

    • You will learn to introduce yourself: your name, your age, where you are from, what work you do
    • You will learn to say what you like and why, and what you do on particular days of the week
    • You will learn to talk about what you do in your spare time, what you like, and what you don't like

    Grammar

    We cover a range of grammar topics in this Italian halfway to A1 course, including:

    • The use of definite articles (il, lo, la, i, gli, and le) and indefinite articles (un, uno, and una), and the differences between Italian and Dutch articles
    • The important verbs essere (to be), avere (to have), chiamarsi (to be named) and the conjugations in the present tense of verbs ending in -ARE, -ERE, -IRE
    • Using and conjugating nouns and adjectives based on their gender and whether they are singular or plural
    • The use of “mi piace”, “mi piacciono”
