Language course Italian for beginners (A1)

If you already have some basic knowledge of Italian, and you can introduce yourself and you have already started learning about Italian grammar, this Italian A1 course will help you to further develop your knowledge of the language so that you can achieve A1 level.

    General

    Entry level

    This course requires some basic knowledge of Italian: you should be able to introduce yourself in Italian and say how old you are and talk about your hobbies and family. You should also be familiar with the articles and important verbs like ‘be’ and ‘have’.

    If you completed the preceding Italian halfway to A1 course for absolute beginners, you will automatically be able to progress to this course. If you did not complete this particular course, we will invite you to take part in a telephone intake so that we can determine whether this course is appropriate for your language level.

    After completing this Italian language course, you will be able to:

    • understand simple words, expressions and sentences;
    • ask and answer simple, short questions;
    • follow a simple conversation;
    • write simple, short sentences about personal matters;

    The course focuses primarily on verbal communication, as well as reading, listening and writing skills. You will also learn more about Italian culture.

    To receive a Radboud in’to Languages certificate, you need to attend 80% of the classes.

    After completing this course, you will have reached language level A1. After this course, you can proceed with the course Italian halfway to A2.

    This course takes place from 30 September until 25 November 2025. There is no class in the week of 13 October because of the Autumn break.

    Class day and time: Tuesdays from 7.45 -9.15 pm.
    Location: On campus in Nijmegen

    Approach and content

    Italian is spoken as much as possible during classes, with Dutch and English as the supporting language. This means that in some cases, it is possible to take the course even if you do not speak Dutch. Please contact our Service Centre for more information.

    You should count on about three to four hours of individual study per week.

    What do the classes cover?

    Skills

    • You will learn to gather and give information, and book a hotel room
    • You will learn to describe a place or a route
    • You will learn to talk about the past, what you did on holiday or yesterday, etc.
    • You will learn to talk about everyday life

    Grammar

    We cover a range of grammar topics in this Italian A1 course, including:

    • More irregular verbs, e.g.: andare (to go), dire (to say), potere (can, may)
    • Introduction to “passato prossimo” (present perfect)
    • The impersonal construction “si” (one)
    • Reflexive verbs
