Language course Russian for beginners (A1)

If you already have some basic knowledge of Russian, and you can introduce yourself, answer short questions and count to 100, and you also have a basic knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet, this Russian A1 course will help you to further develop your knowledge of the language so that you can achieve A1 level.

    General

    Entry level

    This course requires some basic knowledge of Russian: you should be able to briefly talk about yourself, your family and your work. You should know Cyrillic script and know some of the Russian grammatical cases for personal pronouns, possessive adjectives and adjectives.

    If you completed the preceding Russian halfway to A1 course for absolute beginners, you will automatically be able to progress to this course. If you did not complete this particular course, we will invite you to take part in a telephone intake so that we can determine whether this course is appropriate for your language level.

    After completing this Russian language course, you will be able to:

    • understand simple words, expressions and sentences;
    • ask and answer simple, short questions;
    • follow a simple conversation;
    • write simple, short sentences about personal matters.

    The course focuses primarily on verbal communication, as well as reading, listening and writing skills. You will also learn more about Russian culture.

    To receive a Radboud in’to Languages certificate, you need to attend 80% of the classes.

    This course will help you reach language level A1. After completing this course, you can continue with Russian halfway to A2.

    This course takes place from 21 January until 18 March 2026. There is no class in the week of 16 February because of the Spring break.

    Approach and content 

    Russian is spoken as much as possible during classes, with Dutch as the supporting language. This means you cannot take this course if you do not speak Dutch.

    You should count on about three to four hours of individual study per week.

    What do the classes cover?

    Skills

    • You will learn to read, write and question simple short sentences and texts
    • You will learn to describe your profession or study or someone else’s profession or study
    • You will learn how to help someone at the airport
    • You will learn to read information on labels
    • You will learn to talk about your family, work or study, where you live, hobbies, what you do in your free time, what languages you speak and what you like and dislike
    • You will learn to write your story.

    Grammar

    We cover a range of topics in this Russian A1 course, including:

    • The case of singular nouns
    • Fourth (accusative) case and second (genitive) case of personal pronouns and of singular nouns
    • The noun first and fourth case plural
    • The demonstrative pronoun 1 and 4 n.v singular and plural
    • Sixth case of nouns with endings on -У; - Ю
    • Using уже/ещё и тоже/ещё.
