Language course Spanish for absolute beginners (halfway to A1)

¡Hola! Get acquainted with the Spanish language and culture in this Spanish halfway to A1 course, and create a solid foundation for communicating in Spanish effectively. You should take this course if you have no prior knowledge of Spanish.

    General

    After completing this Spanish language course, you will be able to:

    • understand simple words, expressions and sentences;
    • ask and answer simple, short questions;
    • follow a simple conversation;
    • write simple, short sentences about personal matters;

    The course focuses primarily on verbal communication, as well as reading, listening and writing skills. You will also learn more about Spanish culture.

    To receive a Radboud in’to Languages certificate, you need to attend 80% of the classes.

    This course will help you on your way to language level A1. After completing this course, you can continue with the course Spanish A1 to complete the A1 level.

    You can choose from the following 2 groups:

    Group A

    This course takes place from 13 April until 15 June. There is no class in the week of 27 April because of the May break and on 25 May because of Pentecost.

    Class day and time: Monday from 3.30 - 5.00 pm 
    Location: On campus in Nijmegen
    Number of participants: min. 6 - max. 18

    Group B

    This course takes place from 14 April until 16 June. There is no class in the week of 27 April and 4 May because of the May break.

    Class day and time: Tuesdays from 7.45 - 9.15 pm 
    Location: On campus in Nijmegen
    Number of participants: min. 6 - max. 18

     

    Approach and content

    Spanish is spoken as much as possible during classes, with Dutch and English as the supporting languages. This means that in most cases, you can take this course if you do not speak Dutch. Please contact our Service Centre for more information.

    You should count on about three to four hours of individual study per week.

    What will the classes cover?

    Skills

    • You will learn to introduce yourself: your name, your age, where you are from, what work you do
    • You will learn to say what you like and why, and what you do on particular days of the week
    • You will learn things you need while travelling, such as words about geography, the seasons and the weather
    • You will learn to make yourself understood while shopping: what clothes are there, what colours and sizes, how do I find out the price and can I haggle?

    Grammar

    We cover a range of topics in the Spanish halfway to A1 course, including grammar:

    • Using Spanish definite articles (el, la, los and los) and indefinite articles (un, una, unos and unas), and the differences between these and Dutch ones
    • Using personal pronouns in Spanish
    • The important verbs Ser, Estar and Tener, and conjugating these in the present tense
    • Conjugating regular and irregular Spanish verbs in the present tense
    • Using and conjugating nouns and adjectives based on their gender and whether they are singular or plurar
    • Using porque, para and por
    • Using qué, cuál and cuáles
    • Using demonstrative pronouns (including este, esta, eso).

    Please note- you are welcome to choose the version of the book that suits you best. The book will also be used during the course Spanish A1.
