Approach and content
Spanish is spoken as much as possible during classes, with Dutch and English as the supporting languages. This means that in most cases, you can take this course if you do not speak Dutch. Please contact our Service Centre for more information.
You should count on about 2 hours of individual study per day.
What will the classes cover?
Skills
You will learn:
- To introduce yourself: your name, how old you are, where you are from, what you do for work
- To greet people and say goodbye, and ask for and give personal details
- How to express intentions and plans and explain why you do something
- To explain how well you master different languages
- To describe places and express location
- Things you need when travelling, such as geographical elements, the seasons, and the corresponding weather
- How to identify objects in Spanish, and how to express necessity
- To make yourself understood when shopping: what clothes are there, what colours and sizes, how to ask for prices, and how to negotiate
Grammar
We cover a range of topics in the Spanish halfway to A1 summer course, including grammar:
- The gender and number (singular-plural) of nouns, nationalities, and professions
- The important verbs ser, llamarse and tener (to be, to be called, and to have): how to use and conjugate them in the present tense
- Personal pronouns in Spanish
- Using Spanish definite articles (el, la, los and los) and indefinite articles (un, una, unos and unas), and the differences between Spanish and Dutch articles
- The present tense in Spanish: uses and forms
- Using and declining nouns and adjectives based on their gender and whether they are singular or plural
- The use of porque, para and por (because, to and because of) to give a reason
- The use of the verb hay (haber) and estar (there is, to be, and to be located), and the difference between them
- Superlatives and quantifiers (cuantificador), such as muy/mucho (very/much).
- The demonstrative pronouns este, esta, ese, esa (these, those) and the use of the verb tener que (must) in Spanish
- The use and forms of two irregular verbs: ir and preferir (to go and to prefer)
