Are you reasonably comfortable with English, but would you like to be able to express yourself more spontaneously and naturally? In this course, you will further develop your language skills towards B2 level. This will help you learn to communicate effectively on topics you’re less familiar with, and make it easier for you to follow more complex texts.

General

 This course will help you communicate more effectively and confidently in English at B2 level. To achieve this, you’ll focus on practising speaking — speaking and speaking some more. We do this using current topics and realistic (work) situations. This means everything you learn can be put into practice straight away. 

In the final two classes, you decide for yourself what you want to focus on through two optional workshops. This ensures the course is perfectly tailored to your needs.

After this English course, you will be able to:

  • communicate fluently with confidence and actively participate in discussions;
  • give clear and detailed descriptions, express opinions on topical issues and give arguments for and against an issue;
  • understand detailed instructions and explanations, as well as most TV programmes, films and radio broadcasts on familiar topics;
  • read and understand articles, reports and literature that contain complex ideas or arguments, including specific vocabulary in different subject areas.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for anyone with a command of English at B1 level. This means you’re already able to cope well in everyday situations and understand and write texts on familiar topics. 

With our online level test, you can quickly get an indication of your current level. We also use the Oxford Online Placement Test to ensure you start a course that matches your level.

The course consists of six classes, plus two workshops of your choice focusing on specific skills. The six fixed classes will take place from 14 September to 26 October 2026. The skills workshops are scheduled for the following two weeks. There will be no class during the week of 19 October due to the autumn holiday.

  • Class day and times: Mondays from 6 pm - 8 pm
  • Location: on campus in Nijmegen
  • Number of participants: min. 6 - max. 18

In addition to the classes, you should allow for two to four hours of self-study per week. If a lesson is cancelled, it will be rescheduled in the week following the last lesson.

Approach and content

Focus on speaking

You will be fully immersed in English during classes. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to practise speaking English during conversation exercises, role-plays, and other practical tasks. Among other things, you’ll practise taking part in discussions and describing ideas clearly and coherently. You will learn to express and substantiate your views, and to communicate clearly in a variety of situations, both familiar and less familiar. 

You will not be learning new words and grammar as isolated theory, but always as a tool to help you express yourself more fluently, spontaneously and with greater nuance. At the same time, this will also help you to understand more complex texts and conversations with greater ease.

Thanks to personal feedback from your teacher, you’ll know exactly what you’re already doing well and how you can further improve your English communication skills. In addition to a course book, we use a comprehensive digital learning environment, which contains exercises and quizzes to help you further develop your language skills outside of class as well.

The course material can be purchased at Roelants bookstore. Course material is not included in the course fee.

Determine your level with a test

To determine your level, you will first have to take an online placement test (Oxford Online Placement Test, OOPT). The costs are 30 euros. If you enrol after taking the test, the amount will be refunded. An OOPT score between 60 and 80 or a Cambridge Preliminary certificate (score c or higher) is required to enrol in this English B2 course.

If you have successfully completed a course with us you will receive a certificate of Radboud in'to Languages stating your level.

If you want to get an idea of your level on your own, you can do this using our online level test.

Do you have an OOPT score between 60 and 80 or a Cambridge Preliminary certificate (score c or higher)? Then you can register for the English B2 course - Cambridge First.
