You will be assessed at VWO (pre-university education) level. The English Colloquium Doctum consists of three parts:
1. A listening test. This is a digital assessment comprised of listening, fill-in and multiple choice questions Duration: 50 minutes.
2. A writing test. This test consists of five writing assignments. The writing assignments tie in with the usual work involved in the degree programmes. Examples of writing assignments include:
- writing a complaint email about a test you have taken;
- writing a research paper based on provided data;
- expressing an informed opinion on a particular topic.
Duration: 80 minutes.
3. A reading test. This section is comprised of approximately 40 multiple-choice questions about authentic and popular academic texts, divided into four parts:
- Comprehension questions about short articles that deal with contemporary problems, in which the writers adopt a particular perspective.
- Comprehension questions on longer, popular, scientific articles.
- Multiple-choice fill-the-gap questions about words missing from a short academic or semi-academic text.
More concrete information on the time, location and what to bring to the assessment will be provided in a confirmation email upon registration.
Preparation
In the English Colloquium Doctum, there are no materials that need to be studied beforehand and the test does not require any special preparation. Of course, you can practise your writing skills by practising skills like describing and discussing graphs and tables, writing letters and emails, and giving reasoned opinions.
Costs
The assessment costs €220, to be paid by the applicant.
If you fail one or more of the components, you cannot retake individual components later. However, it is possible to re-register for the entire assessment. You have to pay again for this.
