Community Engagement and Organisation

The phenomenon of 'community' seems to be gaining in importance and consequently, more attention is being paid to the subject. This raises the question of what a community actually is and how it can be built. In this programme, you will learn how to effectively build and use a community. Both within your organisation and for communities formed outside the borders of the organisation.

    General

Communities can be created or set up both within and between organisations. We see examples of communities in organisations that exchange information online with customers in order to improve their service and retain these customers. But also in municipalities that work together with local residents and other social parties to make certain neighbourhoods flourish again.

At the same time, there is limited insight into factors that can make communities function optimally. This programme links scientific insights and knowledge about communities from psychology and business administration with practical applications and tools for building effective communities. For example, we look at the motivation for people to participate in communities, but also at how they identify with communities.

The Community Engagement and Organisation programme uniquely links the business and psychological perspectives. Because the programme is designed in a collaboration between Bind, an agency that develops communities for organisations, and Radboud Management Academy, a good balance between practice and theory is guaranteed in the programme.

    Module 1: Foundations of communities

We start by defining what a community actually is and what types of communities we can distinguish. What is the value of a community for people as individuals and for us as a society?

The second day we explore the community as a form of organisation. A form of organisation that, in physical or virtual form, produces goods and services.

Module 2: The psychology behind communities

Organisations are increasingly discovering the benefits of communities. With communities, they have a means of developing social capital, content, products and/or services at relatively low cost. After all, participation in a community is unpaid. However, this requires the organisation to respond to the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of participants.

In this module, we show how this works and what objectives communities can be used for.

Module 3: Communities as drivers of change

In this module we look at how communities can play a role in anchoring change in organisations. We show how a community can contribute to awareness and behavioural change and how it can connect and mobilise colleagues.

Using a concrete case study on sustainability, we reflect on de-normalising the idea that sustainability is 'something nice to have' and how communities can act as drivers for change.

Module 4: Social capital and building communities

In the morning, we will reflect on the community as a working and learning community and explore how people connect to groups. We then delve deeper into the concept of social capital.

In the afternoon, we will answer the question: how do you build a community? This immediately raises a new question: can you build a community at all? Don't communities just arise? In this module we introduce a proven step-by-step plan to achieve a fruitful community.

Module 5: Success factors for communities and conclusion

During the fifth, and final, module, you will look back on the entire programme and discuss all the prerequisites needed to properly manage and successfully develop a community.

This final module also includes presentations in which participants show each other how they have applied the concepts and techniques from the training to their own organisations or communities.
