Greenhouse, phytotron and experimental gardens

The Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences houses an experimental garden. In this modern greenhouse facility, research is conducted on the effect of climate change on plants, research on pollination by insects and even GMO research. Both internal and external researchers can make use of the facility.

Greenhouse & facilities

The facility has eight advanced greenhouse rooms, six climate chambers where the environment can be adjusted to specific research needs, netting rooms and an outdoor experimental field. The experimental garden also has a unique root lab available (Phytotron) where root growth can be studied non-invasively. Only a few other comparable facilities exist in the world.

Greenhouse

The greenhouse has eight growing rooms ranging from 160 to 240 m2. The greenhouse is accommodated with an advanced climate control system, shading and energy-saving screens. Rainwater from the roof is stored in basins and used for watering the plants after UV treatment. On the first floor, you will find a coffee room annex meeting room, offices and dressing rooms.

Climate chambers

There are six climate chambers, each 16m2, available on the ground floor of the greenhouse building. The climate conditions are computer controlled. You can adjust the light regime, light intensity, humidity and temperature according to the specific research requirements.

Rootlab

Root lab (Phytotron)

The root lab (or: Phytotron) is a unique research facility that allows for research on plant growth and below-ground root interaction in big compartmentalised containers without destructive methods.

Experimental field

The experimental field is about 7500 m2 and is suitable for diverse field experiments.

Sustainable innovations

All departments in the greenhouse are equipped with LED lighting, resulting in significant energy savings. Additionally, the greenhouses are connected to the university's HEN++ system, which means that we will virtually eliminate the use of gas, maintaining only a gas connection for emergency purposes.

A gauze system has been installed in all air vents, providing the significant advantage of preventing insects from entering the greenhouse from outside. This development allows us to minimise the use of chemical agents. The climate chambers are also equipped with LED lighting, contributing to additional energy savings.

We strive to maximise the use of biological control agents, further reducing the need for chemical agents.

Future dikes op de campus

Future Dikes project

The facility is involved in a multi-year, large-scale dike vegetation experiment called the Future Dikes project. This research investigates how Dutch dikes can be strengthened with a species-rich grass covering.
