Christian Büll receives the 2025 IGO Hakomori Young Glycoscientist Award

The International Glycoconjugate Organization (IGO) has awarded Dr. Christian Büll as one of the winners of the 2025 Hakomori Young Glycoscientist Award. This prize is given to young scientists to who have made impactful contributions to the field of glycoscience and show strong promise for continued scientific excellence.

Büll will receive the award at Glyco27, a large international meeting about glycoconjugates, where he will present his research during the opening lectures. His work stands out for its innovation and potential to shape the future of glycoscience. The award is named after Dr. Sen-itiroh Hakomori, a famous scientist in this field. With this award, IGO supports young researchers and helps them grow in their careers. "I am very honored to receive this award and look forward to further advance the field of glycoscience", Chris Büll says.

Biomolecular Chemistry

In 2022, Büll started his own research group at the Biomolecular Chemistry department, focusing on unraveling the mechanisms of cellular glycosylation and biological interactions with glycans. Büll currently studies the complex biosynthesis of glycans in the intestine and aims to apply this knowledge to genetically reprogram human cells to produce glycoproteins with custom glycan structures. These kind of molecules can be applied to modulate the intestinal immune system and the intestinal microbiome. The department of Biomolecular Chemistry focuses on understanding autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome, emphasizing the role of B cells and the impact of post-translational modifications such as glycosylation on immunological self tolerance. The research group is part of IMM.

Congratulations to you, Chris!
