NWO SGW Open Competition L grant awarded to Edwin de Jong

Prof. Edwin de Jong has been awarded an NWO SGW Open Competition L grant for his project THRIVE.

Prof. Edwin de Jong has been awarded an NWO SGW Open Competition L grant for THRIVE. Why do communities appear stable while relationships weaken, environmental pressures intensify, and futures become uncertain? Most wellbeing research focuses on individual satisfaction, overlooking collective processes sustaining communities over time. THRIVE develops a new approach by examining how communities flourish through three interconnected dimensions: organizing time (balancing present and future needs), maintaining relationships (care networks, shared responsibilities), and living with their environment (human-nature relationships). Through fieldwork in Indonesian coastal cities facing climate change, THRIVE tests whether community-focused frameworks better explain resilience than individual models, generating practical tools for policymakers to strengthen collective wellbeing during climate disruption. Over the coming five years, Edwin de Jong will carry out the project together with Luuk van Kempen, Anke Tonnaer and Tery Setiawan (Radboud University), Bagus Takwin (Universitas Indonesia), Pujo Semedi and Runavia Mulyasari (Gadjah Mada University), and Ansje Löhr (Open University).
