Research into Trauma Landscapes Receives Multi-Million Grant from NWO

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has recently awarded a substantial grant to an interdisciplinary research project under the Dutch National Research Agenda (NWA). The project focuses on trauma landscapes—sites deeply connected to collective pain, sorrow, and historically significant memories.

Professor Liedeke Plate and professor Elyze Storms-Smeets, both researchers at the Radboud Institute for Culture & History (RICH), are co-applicants of this initiative, which brings together multiple Dutch universities and heritage institutions. The research aims to explore how these places contribute to identity formation and shared historical awareness, and how they function as spaces of remembrance in society.

This funding enables close collaboration between academia and cultural organizations, where scientific reflection and social engagement go hand in hand.
