sIMMposium2024: meeting each other and sharing research

On Friday 15 November 2024, the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) at Radboud University organised its annual sIMMposium. An interactive day dedicated to exploring innovative research in physics and chemistry. The event brought together a large group of researchers, PhD candidates, and master students from IMM for lively discussions, presentations, and networking.

Keynotes: perspectives on IMM themes

We had three inspiring keynote speakers, each of them offering a unique perspective on IMM theme-related research. Nachi Stern from AMOLF spoke about neurons in physical systems, Sadia Bari from the University of Groningen/DESY delved into the power of X-ray spectroscopy to reveal biomolecular structures and Joris Sprakel from Wageningen University shared insights on biomimicry and evolutionary mechanobiology. “I was truly impressed by the enthusiasm of the PhD and postdoc candidates at this event, which I really enjoyed”, keynote speaker Nachi Stern says.

Presentations & research pitches

Our IMM researchers presented their latest research work. Among many, there were presentations from Kim Steenbakkers from HFML-FELIX, Christian Büll from the Biomolecular Chemistry group, and Bono Jimmink from the Magnetic Resonance Research Center, each sharing the newest results of their work.

IMM PhD candidates contributed to the day in a large session of research pitches, presenting their findings to colleagues in smaller groups. Each presentation was followed by livery discussions, representing the range of innovative projects currently pending at IMM. “It is very interesting to see how broad the research at IMM actually is, it is great to see so many different areas being explored”, PhD candidates who participated say.

A nice gathering of ideas

From keynote talks to pitch sessions, this year’s sIMMposium was a great success. Participants enjoyed the interactive and inspiring atmosphere: “It was day full of excellent and engaging talks from the very diverse research groups of the institute. Impressive program that brings us together to interact, discuss new ideas and creates possibilities to collaborate”, many participants say.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to making this day so inspiring and memorable!
