Anick Vollebergh served as a co-editor of a special issue of the journal Social Analysis. It included a co authored introduction by her and a single authored article. Asking why some modes of authority wane and lose their persuasive power, while others rise, this Social Analysis issue develops a theoretical framework for understanding the connection between authority, ethical action and moral order. The articles in the issue, ranging from gang leadership in Kenya, community work in Paris, civil society networks in Ghana, refugee activism in Rotterdam, digital vigilantism in Nicaragua, to Islamic female preachers in Malaysia, and an afterword by Beatrice Jauregui, show ethnographic moments of experimentation with new modes of authority and simultaneous, but not always effective, efforts to ‘undo’ established registers of authority.
