Haley Swedlund, Joshua Fawcett Weiner and Michal Mochtak have won an Dutch Research Council (NWO) Open M grant. In their project, ‘Influence Abroad: How Diplomats Shape Global Politics’, they will investigate the conditions under which diplomats posted abroad, like ambassadors, influence global politics. A particular focus will be on how technological change, decolonization, and the backgrounds of individual diplomats influence foreign policy and state behavior. The project combines archival data and cutting-edge methodological tools, including large language models, to analyze diplomatic activity in the Global South over a period of more than five decades.
