Video: Radboud Explains the American Elections

On 5 November, elections will take place in the United States. But how do elections work in America, and when will we know who the winner is? In this Radboud Explains, researchers explain to you why Europeans should care too, and what you can expect on election night.

In this video, Peter van der Heiden and Amanda de Lannoy tell you all about election night. Which swing states should you keep an eye on, when will we have an idea of the results, and how do those electoral votes works? Amanda also dives into what happens after the election, when suddenly thousands of people are appointed as the new president sets up his or her government. And Peter tells you about some remarkable US presidents of the past.

Peter van der Heiden is associate professor at the Radboud Institute for Culture and History, specialising in US presidential history. He recently published Weg uit het Witte Huis, about what American presidents do after retirement. Amanda de Lannoy is a PhD student at the same institute. She studies conspiracy theories surrounding American politics.
