A multilab replication of Witte

This project aims at a multi-lab replication of Witte (1994). This paper is generally considered the seminal test of the extended parallel process (fear appeal) model (EPPM). It explains that threat and efficacy in a message produce pro-active danger control, whereas a threat without efficacy produces defensive fear control.

Replication studies

Replication studies attempt to repeat earlier studies under identical circumstances and use of the same methodology to see if a previous finding recurs. The outcome of a replication study is informative of the size of an effect and its boundaries. Therefore, replications are considered the cornerstone of science.

Robust research findings

Fundamental research findings must be robust. Findings' replicability is essential not only to scholars who build on previous work but also to society at large, given that policies should only be based on robust, repeatedly demonstrated scientific findings. Direct replications are key to informing us about the robustness of influential studies.
