An adaptive learning tool as a replacement of fact-based knowledge tests. The AI model behind the learning tool analyses whether a student has a grasp of certain facts and it provides suitable exercises at the correct moment.

Key question
How can smart technology be used in replacing knowledge tests by assessing the knowledge level and moment of forgetting as students learn within an adaptive learning system?
Students often cram right before a (knowledge) test and then forget what they have learned after the test. This less-optimal form of learning can be improved by repeating and practising with the materials more frequently. But when is it a good moment to repeat or practise the material? Knowledge tests are sub-optimal for teachers as well. It takes a lot of time to test students, both when it comes to the preparation and the grading of the tests. The adaptive learning tool indicates when a student has a good grasp of a certain component of the material, which then does not have to be tested via a knowledge test anymore.
NOLAI is the national education lab AI for primary, secondary, and special education in the Netherlands, funded by the National Growth Fund. €80 million has been awarded for the period of 2022 to 2032 in order to develop prototypes and gather knowledge about AI in education together with schools, corporations, and scientists over the span of ten years. Each academic year, around ten new projects are launched all across the Netherlands. A project takes three years on average.
